PART 2 School embraces running, Shelly Upton, PE Teacher ![]() January 2, 2006 Many of our KR visitors wrote to inquire about the new kids' track at Elm Grove Elementary School. KR took a few moments to interview P.E. teacher Shelly Upton about the track. KR: Tell us more about the track. S.U.:The track is 1037 ft. a little under a quarter of a mile. We wanted it to be a 1/4 of a mile; however, we had to change locations due to a new housing development that was being built. If we would have made any alterations to the grounds and flooding occurred in the development, the school district could have been held liable. So this was all the space we had left to work with. Nevertheless, the students love it and they are using it now and enjoying it! It is made of crushed granite and it cost $9000 which our wonderful PTA fully funded! We had to get it approved by the school district and the city. It was 5 years, but worth it. Set your goals and don't give up KR: How did you find someone to build this for you? S.U.: It was a company that actually constucts crushed granite trails. Maybe you can look up a company in your area on google.com. KR: Do the kids use it at recess? S.U.: Yes. KR: Do they use it independently or always under the guide of a teacher during class? S.U.: During school hours, it is always supervised. However, it is open for people in the neighborhood to use. We just didn't publicly announce it.
