Dear Coach Keith,
I'm so excited about these sites! I am a new runner with an enthusiastic 9-year-old following behind me and a 6-year-old who claims he hates to run, but just can't be separated from his bike. I want to encourage them now to enjoy these as sports and fitness-keepers, but we're all novices. I have a little bit of a clue how to start my little runner, but it's tougher to find info for my cyclist. I take him everywhere -two weeks to a skate park where he plays around on the ramps, but there is little guidance there for him to learn. He also accompanies my nine-year-old when we run. He would like to know where he can learn more about cycling as a sport, and we would like to all know if there are any children's events in cycling and running in the Nashville, Tennesse area.
Thank you!

Dear
Shanda, Tyler and Gavyn,
The best place to start from scratch is www.usacycling.org.
That is the homepage of USA cycling and there are options to check out
mountain biking, bmx, road, and other types of cycling. There is a lot
of information on the web, but this is clearly the best place to start.
There may be links to the Tennessee area. The other really good place
to find out about local biking events is always at the local bike shop.
Sometimes there are sponsored rides or clubs that are centered around
the business of each bike shop, so it is a good place to meet. If you
have no luck in a small town bike shop, you may have better luck in a
bike shop in a more metropolitan area, as there are usually more customers
and more events revolving around their business. Whenever I travel,
I stop in the local bike shop to start asking my way around, "Where is
a good place to ride? Is there a local club ride around here? Are there
any races? etc."
Ciao and see you on trails, Keith

Running and cycling are both great ways to exercise. Perhaps you could cycle a little as a family and then coax your son to go on a couple very short runs with you. Being young, he might just like to run back and forth across your yard a couple of times. It may be the distance that he does not enjoy as a young child.
Do you have any questions about your training program? If you do email running questions to Coach Mick at coach.mick@rodale.com. Email other questions (such as cycling) to rwedit@rodale.com
