Dear Amby,
I would like to know if you should run on the sidewalk or the road.
Bye,
Brianna
P.S. I don't have a sidewalk. I am in first grade.

Dear
Brianna,
It's okay to run on the road. Just be sure to pick a road that doesn't have a lot of car traffic, and that does have a wide 'shoulder' - the part of the road at the sides. Also, run on the left side of the road facing traffic, so you can always see the cars headed in your direction. Good luck.
Cheers, Coach Amby
This is a photo of Amby Burfoot, Executive Editor, Runner's World Magazine, 1 time winner of the Boston Marathon, 9 time winner of the Manchester Road Race, and 30 time runner of the Manchester Road Race! He is with his wife Cristina at a party the night before the Boston Marathon in the year 2000.
Oh, Brianna's family are Manchester Road Race people too. Dad runs every year and Mom and Brianna spectate. Brianna plans on running someday. Last year I spotted Brianna in the rain wearing a bright yellow rain slicker. I couldn't resist jumping out of the race and giving her a BIG hug. I think it happened so fast that she didn't even realize who I was at first. Teachers look different when they run road races in the rain! Question to Amby Burfoot, "Can you still win a road race if you take the time to jump out and give someone a hug?"
Note from the kids editor to Brianna: I know that you only run on the road with your parents that is a good thing for a six year-old. Keep practicing your running and you will go far! I know you are a great runner because I've seen you in the gym and on the trails.
